As many as 400 migrants may have lost their lives over the weekend, according to interviews given by survivors. The tragedy occurred some 24 hours after a migrant vessel left Libya. During a rescue operation yesterday, smugglers fired shots at rescue vessels and left the scene with the empty migrant boat.

The Archbishop called Fr Mark Montebello to a meeting yesterday, after it emerged he had blessed engagement rings for a gay couple. Mgr Scicluna said that while outreach to the LGBT community was encouraged, Montebello had gotten 'carried away' in his enthusiasm.

The MHRA does not expect the recent online outcry, in the wake of the referendum result, to damage tourism. Several users on Twitter announced a boycott of Malta as a travel destination in protest of the retention of spring hunting.
