Leaders of EU and African countries signed an agreement this morning, which will see the setting up of an emergency trust fund to assist African nations through development.

The Maltese government has pledged €250,000 to the fund, which will initially total €1.8 billion.

African leaders said they felt the financial aid would help their countries get back on their feet and thus be able to receive repatriated migrants.

Members of the local and international press flocked to the Mediterranean Conference Centre this morning, as the leaders arrived for the second day of the summit.

Italian Premier Matteo Renzi, Greece’s Alexander Tsipras and PM Joseph Muscat left journalists without comment. German Councillor Angela Merkel passed through the MCC entrance with an army of men in suits.

Before the summit ends later today, participants will draft a final action plan on the migration issue.
