Minister for culture Owen Bonnici inaugurated the fifth and final project for Heritage Malta this year, at the Tarxien Temples.

The project involved the installation of a protective tent, a new walkway making the historical site accessible for persons with disability, and the development of a new mobile application to complement the tour. The visitors centre was also refurbished.

Heritage Malta Chairman Joseph Buttigieg said that the temples in Tarxien are one of the first discoveries made by Sir Temi Zammit and described in his notebook as 'a gold mine of information'.

In his inauguration speech, Buttigieg explained that the temples are proof of the architectural abilities of the people who inhabited Malta 5,000 years ago.

Parliamentary Secretary for EU Funds Ian Borg told those present that this was another milestone for Maltese heritage. He said that Heritage Malta has been a reliable partner throughout the process. The government has issued a new call for applications to safeguard national heritage sites.

Bonnici said that this was the fifth project this year - previous projects carried out by Heritage Malta include the project in Saint Elmo and the restoration of Saint Paul’s Catacombs in Rabat.
