The automatic detention of newly arrived asylum seekers is set to end, with a new migration strategy laying out six grounds for detention and listing four alternatives. The strategy also includes the setting up of a reception centre, which would house asylum seekers for the first week.

Members of the police corps have reported that they have not received any payment for their work during the CHOGM and migration summits, held in November. There are also reports of officers awaiting payment for extra duties that go back months.

The GWU has launched a new scheme by which employees within the hospitality industry would be issued with a 'passport', detailing their qualifications and past experience within the sector.

Transport minister Joe Mizzi said that there were no plans to ban horses from Maltese roads. However, new regulations impose several safety measures and restrictions on where horses may be ridden.
