Nationalist Party leader Simon Busuttil visited Dar il-Kaptan respite home in Mtarfa on occasion of the home’s 25th anniversary.

Praising the services offered by the home, Busuttil spoke about the importance of giving people with a disability the necessary dignity to live their lives.

“Everyone deserves to live a dignified life, and there is no doubt in my mind that this home offers an invaluable service in encouraging this dignity,” Busuttil said.

Accompanied by Shadow social policy minister Paula Mifsud Bonnici and social dialogue spokesperson Clyde Puli, Busuttil was taken to meet some of the residents and to see some of the services offered at the home.

Dar il-Kaptan, established in 1990, extends an invitation to people with a disability to spend a week at the home every six weeks, to allow relatives and carers of those with a disability to re-charge and rest for short periods.

“Over the years, it became increasingly evident that parents and families of those with a disability need to seek assistance from time to time,” Busuttil said, adding that the home played an important role in ensuring that carers are more able to continue taking care of their loved ones in the long term.

Highlighting the dedication of those at the home, Busuttil also pointed out the importance of parents and relatives understanding the nature of the service offered at the home.

“The PN would also like to extend any form of support it can offer to the home, given the unique service it offers,” he said, adding that the PN was in favour of services that were there to make people’s lives better.
