[WATCH] Tower Road resurfaced in €830,000 project

The busy road in the heart of Sliema was in dire need of resurfacing before the summer tourist influx, Transport Minister Ian Borg said

Tower Road in Sliema has undergone €830,000 worth of resurfacing work in preparation for the increase in traffic during the busy summer months.

The road, which Transport Minister Ian Borg said had needed "immediate attention" due to the structural problems, was resurfaced overnight to avoid causing traffic havoc in the area.

Borg said the works were carried out following appeals by Sliema local councillors, and that the road will still have to eventually be completely rebuilt as part of the government's €700 million road infrastructure project.

The works stretched across the 5km road, from its lowest point at the Sliema ferries to Balluta Bay.

“We cannot be credible in boasting about our surplus if we leave our country’s infrastructure behind,” Borg said.

The minister highlighted that the resurfacing will be helping businesses in the area who expect a heavy influx of tourists as the summer months roll on.

He added that other major roads in Sliema, including High Street, Triq Manuel Dimech and Triq Sir Arturo Mercieca would also be rebuilt in the coming months.
