Misurata ‘freed’ as tonnes of aid, ambulances reach rebel city from Malta
600 tonnes of food and water – together with three ambulances – shipped from Malta have been successfully unloaded yesterday morning in the besieged port-town of Misurata.
The supplies, shipped by the UN World Food Programme (WFP) included vital medical supplies and doctors who were immediately dispatched to assist hundreds of injured in Misurata.
Libyan nationals, volunteers at the Malta-based ‘IGO Libya’ NGO topped up the WPF cargo with more food and water supplies, and also included three locally purchased ambulances following reports that the last ambulance was hit last week by Gaddafi forces.
The aid arrived yesterday amid “relative calm” in the city as forces loyal to Gaddafi reportedly began retreating from the city following two weeks of fierce fighting, which resulted in the killing of hundreds of civilians, including photo-journalists Tim Hetherington and Chris Hondros.
