Andy Burnham to replace Keir Starmer as UK prime minister
Prime Minister Robert Abela congratulates Andy Burnham and says Malta looks forward to maintaining its strong relationship with Britain
Andy Burnham has been confirmed as leader of Britain’s Labour Party and is set to take over as prime minister on Monday.
In his first speech as party leader, Burnham promised to deliver "good growth in every postcode and hope in every heart."
Although he has yet to set out his policies in detail, Burnham has said he will focus on returning power to local communities, leading a pro-business government and building more social housing.
His appointment follows the resignation of former UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who came under mounting pressure following Labour’s poor performance in local elections.
Burnham, the former mayor of Greater Manchester, returned to Parliament after winning the Makerfield by-election in June. His decisive victory intensified pressure on Starmer and strengthened his position as his replacement.
Burnham was ultimately confirmed unopposed after securing overwhelming support from Labour MPs, trade unions, and party affiliates.
