Gareth Southgate: We must remain patient

The English manager insisted that Malta can defend very well and could be hard to break:

“The team defend really well and are organised. The coach is an experienced one and is making good use of his resources. We have to be patient to break them down. They don’t allow many chances. We have to create as many clear opportunities as possible”.

However, the English manager is eager to win the three points to make a step forward towards next year’s World Cup.

When asked about the team that will face Malta, he argued that he has no problems choosing a young side as he believes in the potential of the whole squad. However, he did confirm that Joe Hart will start in goal despite his team making a poor start to the English Premier League.

Southgate didn’t confirm who his captain will be as he wants the squad to share leadership. In fact, he stated that he is still to speak with the players and choose the captain for tomorrow’s match. He argued that he want to develop a group of lads that are ready to take responsibility.

With regards to the amount of Maltese people supporting England, Southgate made an interesting statement by stating that the majority of supporters will be supporting England whatever their nationality.

Kyle Walker accompanied Southgate in the press conference and affirmed his manager’s thoughts by stating that Malta doesn’t suffer 6-0 defeats anymore. He praised the Maltese defence and insisted that it is important to remain patient in order to break Malta.
