On this day 24 years ago: the 'Hand of God' falls upon England

Mexico June 22 1986. Diego Maradona scored the 'Goal of the Century' against England in the quarter-finals, but it was the other goal he scored that really had his opponents infuriated.

As left-sided midfielder Steve Hodge's attempted clearance sailed towards his own goal, Maradona jumped with goalkeeper Peter Shilton sending the ball past the England number one and into the net.

English protests were ingored, as the referee allowed the dubious goal to stand. Still in shock, Bobby Robson's men found themselves two goals down minutes later, and a late Gary Lineker goal was nothing but a consolation. England had been defeated by the 'Hand of God'.
