The government has appointed Maria Micallef as the new chairperson of Air Malta, succeeding Ray Fenech who tendered his resignation for personal reasons.

Micallef has for the last 15 years occupied various senior positions within the Mizzi Organisation. Throughout this period, she has been General Manager of General Soft Drinks Co. Ltd.

She was also the first woman appointed as member on the European Technical Council of The Coca Cola Company to travel widely across several countries, advising cross functional teams.

Micallef holds a MBA from the Maastricht School of Management. She has been serving as a director on a number of boards, including that of Air Malta.

Tourism minister Edward Zammit Lewis acknowledged Fenech's contribution during his chairmanship and thanked him for his sterling service. "Maria Micallef has the qualities that are essential for this position, especially in providing strategic direction to Air Malta which is an integral part of the tourism sector. She will be the first woman appointed as chairperson of Air Malta in the national airline's history."
