Statistics published by the National Statistics Office (NSO) reveal that Malta registered the second highest economic growth amongst the 18 countries which form part of the Eurozone during the second quarter of 2014.

According to these figures, the Maltese economy grew by 2.9% during this period – a figure higher than that envisaged by the European Commision and the Central Bank of Malta.

In a statement released by the Labour Party, it said that this served as confirmation of the government’s positive performance. “These results dismiss the negative discourse which the Nationalist Party and (party leader) Simon Busuttil have adopted,” it said, adding that every time Busuttil critisised the economic performance of the country, the publication of concrete results would later contradict all that he said.

The PL said that the economic growth was trickling down to people’s pockets, with and increase of €52 million – or 6.5% - in salaries when compared to the corresponding period last year.

The PL added that the average economic growth during this government’s legislature was that of 3.3% every quarter. This, it said, was three times more than it stoof during the previous legislature’s final year.

“The facts show that, as more time passes, the country’s economy is becoming one of the strongest in Europe,” the statement concluded.
