Arrivals in collective establishments in Malta in July down by 16,788 – NSO

The latest statistics issued by the NSO for collective establishments showed that in July 2010, total arrivals in collective accommodation establishments amounted to 144,878 as against 128,090 arrivals the previous month, a decrease of 16,788 arrivals over the previous month.

Non-resident arrivals increased by 17,403 from 115,569 in June 2010 to 132,972 in July 2010, while the number of resident arrivals decreased by 615 from 12,521 in June 2010 to 11,906 in July 2010.

The NSO reported that the number of non-resident nights spent in Malta in July increased by 231,279 nightsfrom 746,111 in June 2010 to 977,390 in July 2010, while the number of resident nights spent in Malta increased slightly by 1,884 nights from 27,018 nights in June 2010 to 28,902 in July 2010.

On an annual basis, the NSO reported that total arrivals in collective accommodation establishments amounted to 144,878, an increase of 15.0% when compared to last year's levels.

According to the NSO, non-resident arrivals and nights both registered increases over 2009 and stood at 132,972 and 977,390 respectively. Increases were recorded in the 5, 4 and 3-star hotel categories when compared to last year, as well as in other collective accommodation establishments.

The average length of stay for non-residents stood at 7.4 nights, down by 0.2 when compared to last year. Resident arrivals and nights decreased by 13.8 and 12.9% respectively.

However, according to the NSO, the average length of stay remained unchanged from last year, at 2.4 nights.

The overall net occupancy rate in collective accommodation establishments stood at 82.5%, an increase of 10.1% when compared to last year.

The non-resident occupancy rate was 80.1%, while resident occupancy dropped by 0.3%. A significant increase was noted in the occupancy level of 3-star hotels and in apart-hotel accommodation.

According to the NSO, during July, arrivals in Malta had advanced by 14.7% when compared to last year while total nights rose by 13.1%. Increases were also noted in respect of Gozo and Comino.

The occupancy rate in Malta stood at 83.5%, while in Gozo and Comino the estimate was of 59.7%.

The NSO reported that occupancy levels increased “consistently at a regional level”.

The average length of stay for Malta as well as Gozo and Comino remained almost unchanged when compared to last year, and stood at 7.1 and 3.9 nights respectively.

The NSO reported that the overall net supply of bed-places in Malta was 38,545, down by 1,049 when compared to the corresponding month last year. Bed-places in Gozo and Comino were down by 50 and stood at 1,701. At a national level, the net number of bedrooms decreased by 500.
