Man handed suspended sentence after admitting nightclub necklace theft
21-year-old recovered by security staff inside a Paceville club pleaded guilty after a stolen gold necklace was found in his possession
A 21-year-old man has received a two-year prison sentence suspended for four years after admitting to stealing a gold necklace from a nightclub in Paceville.
Ismail Sbai, an Italian national residing in Swieqi and employed as a gardener, pleaded guilty before the court on Monday.
The incident occurred during the early hours of Sunday 14 June, at the Toy Room nightclub. According to evidence presented in court, the victim was socialising and dancing with friends when he became aware of a man behaving suspiciously nearby.
Shortly afterwards, the victim realised that a gold choker necklace had been pulled from his neck. When he turned around, he allegedly saw the thief making off with the jewellery.
The victim immediately alerted the venue's security personnel and provided a description of the suspect, who was said to be wearing a black shirt and had curly hair.
Security staff intervened and detained the suspect before police arrived on the scene. Court heard that Sbai was stopped while attempting to leave the establishment through its main exit.
During a search, officers recovered the missing necklace, which had an estimated value of between £1,000 and £2,000. The item was subsequently returned to its owner.
The court was also informed that the accused cooperated with investigators throughout the case.
Magistrate Caroline Farrugia Frendo found Sbai guilty and imposed a two-year prison sentence, suspended for four years.
The prosecution was led by Inspector Dylan Pace together with Attorney General lawyer Marcea Fenech.
Lawyer Francois Dalli appeared for the accused.
