Italian businessman arrested in Malta, refuses extradition

An Italian national has refused to be extradited to face serious fraud charges in his country.

48 year-old Sicilian Angelo Fregapane has been remanded in custody by a Magistrate, which denied him bail, following his arrest in Malta in connection with a warrant for his arrest issued by the Italian judiciary, where he faces charges for fraud and embezzlement on millions of euros.

Fregapane, who was arrested yesterday by the Police Intelligence Unit, arraigned Fregapane before Magistrate Giovanni Grixti.

Fregapane - who is being defended by lawyer Paul Lia - was arrested from a flat in Qawra, and insisted that he was refuting the extradition request.

Fregapane has been wanted by Magistrates in Agrigento, Sicily over an alleged multi-million euro fraud to the detriment of a number of creditors and shareholders in various companies.

As a director of CESPEDA, and of Informatica Service Spa, between 1991 and 1999, Fregapane allegedly embezzled more than €1 million through his chairmanships in various other companies.

Fregapane was a high profile businessman in Sicly until he was arrested in 2010 and disappeared after spending three months under house arrest.

News of his arrest in Malta has hit the headlines in Italy this morning.

How could anybody refuse to be extradited if this is a legal request by a court of llaw? Just kick him out and let him face his own country's legal system.
