Man denies stealing clothes

The man was found to be drunk - apparently from taking sips from other people's drinks in a nightclub, while their backs were turned.

A Libyan visitor to Malta has been remanded in custody this morning after he was charged with stealing clothes from shops in St. Julian’s and carrying a knife without a permit.

33-year-old Mohamed M. Mahdi Mahdi, who has no fixed address in Malta, denied stealing a jacket, a t-shirt, a mobile phone and carrying the knife.

Inspector Trevor Micallef told Magistrate Natasha Galea Sciberras that at the time of his arrest, Mahdi had been found to be drunk - apparently from taking sips from other people's drinks in a nightclub, while their backs were turned.

Mahdi was also charged with breaching the terms of a suspended sentence.

Legal aid lawyer Abigail Bugeja did not request bail and the accused was remanded in custody.
