President formally dissolves parliament

Malta’s parliament was dissolved on Monday evening, with a general election scheduled for Saturday 30 May.

President Myriam Spiteri Debono took the decision at 7:30pm after meeting Prime Minister Robert Abela. Acting on the prime minister’s advice, the president exercised her powers under Articles 76 and 77 of the Constitution.

In a formal proclamation, the president declared that Parliament had been dissolved with immediate effect.

She also set 30 May as the date for the election of members of the House of Representatives.

Earlier in the day, the president met Chief Electoral Commissioner Joseph Camilleri at San Anton Palace and issued the necessary writ for the election, in line with the General Elections Act.

Camilleri, together with electoral commissioners Melianie Azzopardi, Veronique Dalli, Richard Dimech, Dianne Galea, Ian Micallef, Maria sive Marion Portelli, Salvu Sant, Victor Scerri, Angelito Sciberras and Joseph Scicluna, has been tasked with overseeing the election across all 13 electoral districts.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives has also been informed of the developments.
