Young people joining the labour market will be exempt from tax for three years, Robert Abela told Labour supporters in Żejtun on Tuesday evening.

The Labour leader contrasted the electoral pledge with what he described as the precarious situation young people faced in other European countries. He emphasised that a Labour government will guarantee a social Malta that cares for people from the cradle to the grave and every step of their life.

He insisted Malta was able to care for its people because the economy was doing well. He referenced the social proposals targeting young people, parents and pensioners unveiled in the morning and promised that the “best is yet to come”.

He said the proposals to increase maternity and paternity leave, the introduction of six months of paid shared parental leave, the increase in the new child bonus to €5,000, and 28 additional days of leave for parents with children under two years of age as a “new social pact with parents”.

Abela reiterated the pledge to increase pensions and promised that more proposals targeting elderly people will be announced in the coming weeks.

“I ask you once again to trust me and my competent team,” Abela said, adding that the Labour Party still had more work to do.

The rally was also addressed by former parliamentary secretary Franco Mercieca, who announced that he will be contesting the election again with the PL, and MP Naomi Cachia.
