Alex Borg has promised to resign if his government doesn’t deliver its proposed mass rapid transport (MRT) system.

Borg was speaking during what was supposed to be a debate on Il-Każin, as Robert Abela snubbed the event.

The Opposition Leader insisted that he is confident in the plan and the team of experts behind it.

Last week, the PN presented its plan for an underground MRT system, which will mainly be underground.

The first proposed line would extend 11.5km through Malta’s densest urban corridor, connecting the Airport, St Venera, Ħal Qormi, the University area, Gżira, Sliema, St Julian’s and Pembroke. Trains are expected to operate at a frequency of eight trips per hour, or roughly every seven minutes under normal operating conditions.

Acknowledging doubts about the viability of the project within the five-year timeline, Borg insisted that the project is possible.

During the programme, Borg explained that his party's manifesto is costed at €6.7 billion.

On the subject of party financing, Borg stated that the PN’s debt stands at €32 million, with the majority of that belonging to its media arm. Here, he outlined a plan to introduce a constitutional reform that would see changes in party financing laws.

He promised more transparency and stricter rules for political parties and their subsidiaries.
