Retired judge reiterates importance of Church-State separation

Retired judge Philip Sciberras says a lot of nonsense has been said about divorce.

“I could not tolerate that Christ and the Holy Mary were being used as if they were salt in a pot,” the 66-year-old judge told sister newspaper Illum on the divorce referendum campaign.

“The misfortune is that the Maltese Church does not want to recognise the dicotomy between state and church, something which the Popes themselves said it should be done.”

Sciberras adds that Malta’s constitution is a “confessional” one: “Similar to what happened in the past, the Church will continue to lose its followers.” He added that some members of the clergy have gone as far as saying “they want to interfere in what goes on in the bedroom of a married couple!”

John Azzopardi, your comment might have been cheaply sarcastic however it has only served to expose your sheer lack of understanding of the subject and the realities around us and hence your rash judgement of Judge Philip Sciberras. He is one of the few prominent Maltese figures who is intelligent, knows what he is saying and is not afraid to tell it like it is.

Philip Sciberras is not talking about 'listening to the church'. He means get the church off the constitution of Malta and off all statutes. I would like to suggest secular schooling as well. Church authorities are not worth having if their existence are disempowering the people they are meant to be serving.

What a genious this judge is. We already have separate of church and state. I know of very few people - many the old - who listen to what the church says.
