Enemalta has appointed engineer Ryan Fava as its executive chairman, replacing outgoing CEO Jonathan Cardona.

Fava served as the company’s non-executive chairman since 2022.

The company said in a statement on Thursday Fava will now also head the company’s management board “as it continues the implementation of the national long-term electricity network reinforcement plan”.

The move comes a couple of months after the government denied rumours that Cardona was going to be removed following the failure of the electricity network during July’s heatwave.

The company said Cardona will be relinquishing his post to embark on “a new career opportunity” following a handover period in the coming weeks.

In his first comments, Fava said Enemalta will be consolidating the electricity infrastructure to support Malta’s decarbonisation objectives. “We have important developments ahead of us, including the introduction of offshore renewables as an important source of clean energy, increased investment in land-based renewables and grid-scale storage systems, new electricity interconnections with other countries and the electrification of vessels at ports and road transport,” Fava said.

He added that Enemalta is accelerating the upgrading of its electricity distribution system to prepare for these milestones.

Fava thanked the outgoing CEO for spearheading Enemalta’s operations and infrastructural projects during the last two years.

An engineer by profession, Fava completed his studies at the University of Malta and Brunel University London, before serving in different engineering roles within the private sector.
