Advocates to 'support' Judiciary on conditions, but actions may be suspended

The Chamber of Advocates is prepared to support the Judiciary's boycott on governmental activities in protest over their working conditions, but both sides are expected to attend next Monday’s opening of the Forensic Year.

Sources close to the Judiciary said that discussions have been held between yesterday and this morning, where senior members of the Judiciary have agreed to ‘suspend’ their action and attend Monday’s Forensic Year ceremony.

Chief Justice Silvio Camilleri is expected to make a speech on Monday, while the President of the Chamber of Advocates Reuben Balzan will reciprocate the speech.

Balzan has recently stated that the working conditions of the judiciary, including their pay, have to improve but changes should also be accompanied by better performance and greater accountability, according to the head of the Chamber of Advocates.

Sources also told MaltaToday that should the Judiciary choose to boycott next Monday’s ceremony, the Chamber of Advocates too would absent themselves in support of the Judiciary’s call for better conditions.
