Tony Bezzina Garden inaugurated in Paola

A new public garden dedicated to former Tony Bezzina was officially inaugurated on Friday evening in Paola, transforming a central urban area into a recreational space for the community.

The project, known as Tony Bezzina Garden, forms part of an urban regeneration initiative carried out through collaboration between the Transport Ministry, the Environment Ministry, and the Paola Local Council.

Spanning around 2,600 square metres, the site has been converted into a modern and accessible public space that includes what authorities described as Malta’s first professionally designed skatepark built according to European standards. The area also features a public garden and a children’s playground, alongside pedestrian pathways, benches, adequate lighting and other public facilities.

During excavation works, a World War II air-raid shelter was discovered on site. As part of the project, a dedicated entrance was constructed to ensure the shelter is preserved and can be made accessible to the public in the future.

The development also incorporates environmental sustainability measures. A water reservoir integrated into the garden’s design will be used for irrigation, while solar panels will provide part of the energy required to light the area.

The garden is dedicated to Bezzina, a former president of Hibernians FC and a well-known figure in Paola. A bust of Bezzina has also been installed in the garden in recognition of his contribution to the local community and sport.

Transport and Infrastructure Minister Chris Bonett said the project reflects the government’s policy of identifying sites across various localities that can be transformed into modern public spaces for community use.

Bonett said that through Infrastructure Malta, work is currently underway on several similar projects in collaboration with local councils and other government entities.

“In this case we had the opportunity to transform the area into a garden, a professional skatepark and a playground for children, while also commemorating Tony Bezzina, who contributed greatly to Paola in several sectors, including sport and business,” Bonett said.

Environment Minister Miriam Dalli said the project places environmental considerations at its core and includes the planting of a substantial number of indigenous trees so the garden can continue to grow as a green space for the community.

“When I look at Tony Bezzina Garden, I see more than just a garden. I see a space built for people, created through collaboration and designed for future generations,” Dalli said, adding that she looks forward to seeing families and children make use of the space.

Works were carried out by Infrastructure Malta in collaboration with the Paola Local Council and Ambjent Malta.
