PA moves to designate Żejtun’s Wied iż-Żrinġ as ODZ
The Planning Authority encourages all interested parties to review the proposals and submit their feedback by 3 July
The Planning Authority (PA) published a partial review to redesignate Żejtun's Wied iż-Żrinġ as Outside the Development Zone (ODZ) following instructions from the government.
The PA explained that the proposed changes seek to ensure the long-term protection of the site by removing it from the development zone and safeguarding it from incompatible uses and other potential adverse impacts.
On Tuesday, Cabinet agreed to remove the site from the development zone, while the PA said the review reflects the area’s significant agricultural, ecological and cultural value.
This comes after the space was earmarked in 2018 for an expansion of the industrial area, which caused massive public outcry due to the environmental impact it would have on biodiversity, including the Maltese Painted Frog, in the area.
Last year, the government responded by signing a deal to ensure that the area beside the Bulebel Industrial Estate remains solely agricultural.
As part of the review process, the PA said amendments are being proposed to the current designations contained in Maps 2A and 2B of the Strategic Plan for Environment and Development (SPED) 2015.
More details on the consultation may be found on www.pa.org.mt/consultation.
The PA encouraged all interested parties to review the proposals and submit their feedback during the consultation window, noting that the submission deadline is on 3 July.
Submissions are to be made through the official online form available at publicconsultation.gov.mt.
