The Environmental Health Directorate announced that a section of sea in Birżebbuġa has reopened for swimming after sewage contamination was detected last week.

The directorate said repeated seawater samples taken from the bathing site in recent days confirmed that the area is once again safe for swimmers.

The bathing site along Dawret il-Qalb Imqaddsa was closed on 8 June after sewage leaked into the sea, marking Malta’s 16th beach closure incident since May.

Environmental health officers traced the source of the contamination to private residences in Triq it-Tankijiet. An abatement notice was issued to the property owner responsible, while legal proceedings have also been initiated.
