Momentum expressed support for concerns raised by the Għaqda Festa Madonna tal-Karmnu Valletta over difficulties encountered while preparing for the annual feast celebrations.

The party’s statement comes after a 100-year-old statue was toppled by accident while a film crew was producing a film in St George’s Square.

In a statement, Momentum said the time and effort dedicated by volunteers to preparing decorations and festivities form an integral part of Malta's cultural identity and should be protected.

The party insisted that voluntary cultural activities should not be placed at a disadvantage when competing with commercial interests, including the occupation of public spaces by tables and chairs.

It said prioritising commercial activity over traditional celebrations sends the wrong message about the value placed on Malta's cultural heritage.

Party secretary Carmel Asciak said volunteers should not face unnecessary bureaucratic or logistical difficulties when organising traditions that have been maintained for generations.

"If we lose our own traditions, we lose part of our collective memory and national identity," Asciak said. "Once these customs disappear, they cannot be re-established."
