MTA identifies licensing breaches during Swieqi accommodation inspections
Malta Tourism Authority carries out enforcement operation targeting tourist accommodation rental properties in Swieqi over the past two days, as part of its ongoing efforts to ensure compliance with regulations governing the sector
The Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) carried out an enforcement operation targeting tourist accommodation rental properties in Swieqi over the past two days, as part of its ongoing efforts to ensure compliance with regulations governing the sector.
MTA enforcement officers conducted 252 inspections during the operation.
The inspections found that 67 properties were in breach of one or more licensing or operational requirements, while six properties were found to be operating without the necessary licence or authorisation.
As a result of the irregularities identified, the authority has so far issued 14 enforcement notices. Six properties will also be blacklisted in accordance with the provisions of Subsidiary Legislation 409.24.
Tourism Minister Jo Etienne Abela said the findings demonstrate the government's commitment to strengthening governance within the tourism sector and ensuring that all operators comply with the same regulatory standards.
"The quality and reputation of Malta's tourism industry depend on the seriousness with which we enforce the regulations," Abela said. "We have a responsibility towards operators who invest in and run their businesses in accordance with the law, as well as towards our residents and visitors. Those who choose to operate outside the law should know they will face immediate and decisive action."
Abela said the enforcement operations form part of a broader strategy aimed at improving the quality of tourist accommodation and enhancing Malta's competitiveness as a destination that places quality, compliance and sustainability at the centre of its development.
The MTA said follow-up inspections will continue in the coming weeks as it maintains close monitoring of compliance across the sector. The authority said it will not hesitate to take further enforcement action wherever regulatory breaches are identified.
The Ministry for Tourism and the MTA said they remain committed to maintaining a robust regulatory framework that supports a sustainable, high-quality tourism product while ensuring fair and equitable conditions for all operators in the sector.
