Labour Party elects executive, veteran Ray Azzopardi tops the vote

The Labour Party has a new executive after delegates elect 12 ordinary members

Veteran Labour Party activist and broadcaster Ray Azzopardi received the most votes from party delegates in an election for 12 members of the executive.

Azzopardi topped the list with 529 votes, followed by veteran Gozitan activist Ġuża Cassar, who obtained 456 votes. Former PL CEO George Azzopardi clocked in at third with 399 votes.

The results were announced on Sunday morning at the closing session of the PL’s general conference, the first after the general election.

The head of the PL’s electoral commission, Edwin Borg Caruana said 32 candidates contested the 12 executive seats reserved for ordinary members. Turnout among delegates with the right to vote stood at 92%.

The 12 elected members are: Ray Azzopardi, Ġuża Cassar, George Azzopardi, Jason Farrugia, Jason Micallef, Ray Falzon, Nolan Camilleri, Rosette Cassar, David Caruana, Wayne Sammut, Jessica Schembri and Fiona Borg Lewis.

There was no election for the four members of the administration since the incumbents were uncontested.

Alex Sciberras was confirmed president, Louis Gatt as vice president, John Grech as international secretary, and William Lewis as organisational secretary.
