St Augustine College to host 400 more students

Government passes transfer of property resolution to build new primary school extension on same site where Pieta Medical School once stood.

Minister for Fair Competition and Consumers Jason Azzopardi this morning passed on a transfer of property resolution in Parliament the property of which government is proposing to give to the Augustinian Province of Malta to house a new primary school on the same site where the Pieta Medical School once stood.

Earlier this year MEPA had turned down the application for the construction of the new school.

St Augustine College Rector Fr Alan Scerri had told MaltaToday that "the turning down of the application meant that hundreds of children would be denied the chance of being educated within a Church School setting with a smooth transition from primary to secondary". He had urged the authorities to help find a positive solution to launch the project.

Following its approval, the new wing will host a further 400 students apart from another 400 already attending the college so that the building can now host a total of 800 primary and secondary school students.

Government is proposing to rent the place for 99 years where classrooms, a car park, as well as a recreational and sports area, will be developed.

The St Augustinian monks have committed with government to invest not one million euros in the project, the works of which will kick off as soon as Mepa issues the relevant permits.

Minister Azzopardi said that this initiative is another taken by government in favour of students and for students to make good use of.

The word "not" in the penultimate paragraph before "one million" doesn't make sense. It changed the meaning, I suspect, of the sentence. What did you mean?

VALUES BEFORE VOTES or was it value for money?
