Addressing members of the press on the occasion of the signing of the Biannual Collaborative Agreement between Malta and the World Health Organisation, the international health organisation's regional director for Europe Zsuzanna Jakab praised Malta's achievements in the health sector.

"Malta is a role model for the European region and the advances the country made within the health care sector are remarkable.

"Since occupying the post of regional director I followed closely Malta's achievements in this regard, particularly in the number of strategies and policies the country has adopted during these last three to four years.

"Malta has adopted a large amount of policies, such as obesity, sexual health and cancer, among others in such a short period, an indication of efficient health leadership," Jakab said.

Health Minister Joe Cassar meanwhile said that the collaboration between Malta and WHO has been going on for several years and such agreements result in various projects and initiatives within the Health Department, which were fulfilled thanks to financial and technical expert advice.

Cassar added that the agreement signed today is part of a six-year collaboration agreement between the WHO European regional office and the ministry, covering the World Health Organisation strategic plan period.

The aim of the BCA is to enforce health and increase health distribution equality in the population.

Between today and tomorrow over 28 foreign ministers for health, 480 delegates and 50 accompanying persons are arriving in Malta to attend the regional committee. Princess Mary of Denmark, a patron of WHO, and Margaret Chan, Director General of WHO, will also form part of the delegation meeting in Malta.

Dear WHO Regional Director for Europe Zsuzsanna Jakab, A role model is something that runs excellently and efficiently. Do you want me to show you what kind of appointments we get from what you called "Role Model". Two appointments were given to me to be entertained in a year's time. A "role model" is when you spend 36 hours in the emergency on a stretcher serving as a roundabout? I was the one involved abd no one else. When people talk like you I came to the understanding that either they are daydreaming or were bribe to speak in this way. One has to go through such experiences to speak and not pop out of nowhere and thinks he/she know it all. Hope you enjoyed your paid holiday.

What the European regional director does not know is that "the large amount of policies adopted are not followed up. They are simply put on paper and left to rot. Take obesity or cancer, what was the improvement taking a 5, 10 or 20 year span? The European regional director is simply responding from what the Health Minister himself informed her. She has no means to verify the information she was provided. And then we make news of this.

Good maybe, but role model is a bit too heavy. Just because we publish policy booklets over the last year, with a looming election, lets impliment them seriously.

Who thee muck is this dude? Certain is is well covered by a private health insurance and has not slept on a stretcher in a corridor and always found her medicine in stock. Like the maltese saying goes "Bil-flus taghmel triq fil-bahar" (With money you build a road on water) and I wonder how much it cost this little PR exercise. I am sure Franco Debono will be impressed and retrieves his motion against Cassar. It has started, foreign interference at our expense with our tax money. Anyway she is only being nice for free expenses holiday.

If WHO knew how the same consultants who conduct private sector operations also control waiting lists with absolutely no transparency - they would probably be less enthusiastic. One also wonders what they would have to say about how and why doctors are organised in so-called "firms". Best practices my foot.
