LifeCycle cyclists now in Switzerland

Two stopped because of knee injuries

Yesterday night the last LifeCycle cyclists completed the San Gottard Pass time trail through the Alps at 6pm, after an arduous climb of 20km, which was also another challenge in itself. Now they’ve stopped in Altdorf, Switzerland.

In memory of Cliff Micallef, the committee created a time trail competition, to see who would be the fastest up the mountain pass. This was won by experienced cyclists Marcelle Saliba followed closely by Steve Chetcuti. A fantastic 25km downhill ride into the attractive valley village of Altdorf followed, where the cyclists stopped for the night in a typical log cabin, supplied by the local authorities at a very low price.
Two cyclists were forced to drop out due to knee injuries, however they joined the back up team to help along with the other cyclists. Another cyclist had a problem with his bike which was fixed by a local bike shop near Lugano free of charge.

LifeCycle raises money for the renal patients of Malta. This year it is hoping to raise enough money to help outpatients at the renal unit by providing permanent transport to and from the hospital as well as giving money to the Kidney Organisation to help fund cures.
This year’s route will see riders travelling over 2,000km from Venice to Old Trafford taking on some of the toughest bike routes in Europe. The two week adventure for extreme cyclists will end at the home of Manchester United, Old Trafford.

This association has been made possible due to the official sponsor of Lifecycle, Betfair, who are the betting partner of both Manchester Utd and Barcelona. It is hoped that several of the first team squad and staff of Manchester Utd will take part in the last few kilometres of the race to see the riders cross the finish line.

The route will also incorporate three challenges within the main challenge, one of which is dedicated to Cliff Micallef, who was tragically killed last year training for LifeCycle.
