Busuttil anticipates radical changes for PN

PN leader Simon Busuttil says that his electoral test came too soon for him and the party

Opposition leader Simon Busuttil this morning said that he is ready to reinvent the Nationalist Party in order to convince the electoratethat the party has truly changed in four years tim.

While being interviewed on RTK radio, Busuttil announced that necessary “radical changes” will be carried out in the near future, although he added that changes had already took place throughout the past year.

The PN leader expressed his frustration that in just a year it was ‘impossible’ to overturn the 36,000-vote deficit.

“On several occasions I reiterated that our aim was to obtain the third seat even though we were mocked that this was already ours. The result confirmed our approach that the third seat was not a foregone conclusion,” he said.

Comparing himself to an O-level student who had to face an exam when he had not yet completed 20% of his course, he said that at this time it was unfair and premature to pass judgement on his leadership.

“Even though the result was disappointing, the win of the third seat is a ray of light since that was our only aim,” the opposition leader stated.

Asked whether the opposition's negative campaign was one of the reasons behind the loss, Busuttil admitted that some things could have been done in a better way, such as the sticker album that mocked the government’s pledge of meritocracy.

“But it’s unfair to label the opposition as negative. We were the first opposition who backed the government’s nomination of Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca for President. We presented several private members bill for legislation, showing that it’s a pro-active opposition. It was the Labour Party who adopted negative campaigning and TV spots which were libellous,” Busuttil underlined.

During the interview the PN’s leader announced that David Casa will be serving as head of delegation, despite the fact that Roberta Metsola polled around 12,000 votes more than him.
