The Nationalist Party has approved its first batch of candidates for the general elections, in a move that Opposition leader Simon Busuttil will offer new input from candidates in the party’s electoral policies.

The PN’s executive committee approved 12 candidates who will contest the general elections on the PN ticket for the first time ever.

“Today’s decision shows that the PN is undergoing a regeneration and renewal process, and that it must involve new people. This process is still in its infancy, but it will lead to a party that will be radically different,” Simon Busuttil said.

Six of the 12 candidates are women, a fact that Busuttil pointed out was a first for a party to respect gender equality.

“The candidates represent a wide spread of experience and talent, as well as ethnic origin,” he said.

The candidates were chosen in an intensive process of interviews and scrutiny by the PN’s candidates’ selection committee led by former European Commissioner Joe Borg.
