Older persons belong at the heart of society - PN

In a statement marking the International Day of Older Persons, the PN expresses its appreciation for 'all the work that has been done and which continues to be done by the older segment of society'

Older persons belong at the heart of society, according to Mario Galea, opposition spokesman for the elderly. In a statement released on the occasion of the UN International Day of Older Persons, Galea expressed its appreciation for all the work that has been done and which continues to be done by the older segment of society.

The concept of active aging has always been endorsed by the Nationalist party, it says, pointing out that under the previous administration a number of specialised nursing homes, day centres and night shelters were opened,  as well as measures aimed at assisting the elderly who live independently.

“The PN believes that older persons should be given the opportunity to keep on working past retirement age because not only have they already given a lot to the country, but they can also still make an important contribution.”

Galea praised the elderly who are still active in their communities, performing voluntary work, especially in their parishes, social organisation, clubs, and with their local councils.

Foremost, however was the family. “That many older persons choose to help in the raising of their grandchildren to allow their children to  carry on with their careers is worthy of great praise and respect, especially because they do so without fanfare.”

Galea expressed the PN’s appreciation to caregivers who work with the elderly, both in residential homes and private residences, some on a voluntary basis.
