MHRA president Matthew Pace has, since 2001, been operating a restaurant without the Class 6 permit required to cook on site. Pace blames landlord Alexander Cutajar for hiding the fact from him when the contract was first made while Cutajar says aleration works carried out by Pace triggered MEPA's revocation of the permit.

Opposition leader Simon Busuttil said in a radio interview that the government should redistribute the fruits of a strong economy fairly, in particular to the vulnerable members of society, workers and the elderly.

The General Workers Union has expressed hopes that the government, through today's Budget, will take the opportunity to tackle the issue of precarious employment. It also reiterated its calls for a revision of the way the retail index is used to determine the cost of living allowance.

Finance minister Edward Scicluna has ruled out an increase in VAT, saying that the 'indirect taxes' mentioned in the draft Budget do not refer to value added tax.
