Vandals set alight part of Victoria Gate
Part of Victoria Gate, one of the entrances that currently leads to Valletta, was today vandalised by unidentified persons who threw some flammable liquid and set it alight. As a result of this, the gate’s stonework has been damaged.
Only a few months ago, the gate had been restored by the Ministry for Rural Affairs and Resources, costing almost half a million euros.
The Rural Affairs’ Ministry in a statement issued this afternoon has “strongly condemned” this vandal attack.
Government workers from the Restoration Department were “immediately despatched on site” to try to reverse “as much as possible” the damage caused to the stonework at the Gate.
The Rural Affairs’ Ministry expressed its commitment “to continue with the programme of restoration projects” in order to preserve the “historical jewels that our forefathers have bequeathed us”.
The Ministry lamented that whoever committed this vandal act “did not appreciate the work performed by skilled workmen who with the utmost attention and skill restored this jewel”.
It recalled how the restoration works that had been performed on the entire Ta’ Liesse area, including Victoria Gate, had cost more than €400,000.
