Nationalist Party leader Simon Busuttil said that the party agreed with the idea of further regulating Law as a profession. Speaking during the opening speech of a meeting with representatives of the Chamber of Advocates, Busuttil made particular reference to the proposed Lawyers Act.

“We believe that the profession should remain as autonomous as possible, but we also see that having further regulation can secure more high quality jobs and services,” he said, adding that the party would offer its support to the Chamber.

Chamber of Advocates president George Hyzler said that in their position as guardians of the rule of law, the chamber felt that the regulation of the profession was a natural step forward, and he expressed his gratitude that the opposition was on board with their suggestions.

“”We hope that we will be able to push this act forward as soon as possible,” he said, adding that gaining more support was essential to this.

Busuttil also presented Hyzler with a copy of the party’s document on good governance.

“Your profession also deals with justice and good governance,” he said adding that the opposition had treated it as a central point given the emergence of scandals throughout the past two years.

Explaining that the document would be up for public consultation as from next year, Busuttil said that it contained solutions and proposals to some of the most pressing matters of the current administration.

Secretary General Rosette Thake and shadow Justice minister Jason Azzopardi were also present at the meeting, which continued behind closed doors.
