Four candidates vying for Leo Brincat’s seat

Four Labour candidates submit nomination for casual election for seat vacated by Malta’s representative at the European Court of Auditors Leo Brincat

Four candidates have so far submitted their nomination for the causal election which will determine who will replace the former environment minister Leo Brincat, who will be moving on to the European Court of Auditors.

Former Msida mayor and Mount Carmel CEO Clifton Grima was the first to throw his name in the hat and he has now been joined by Simon Saliba, Emanuel Micallef and Nikita Zammit Alamango.

Nominations close at noon on Saturday 8 October.

The casual election is scheduled for October 11, and Grima is the frontrunner in the race. He had garnered 1,646 first count votes and was the penultimate candidate to be eliminated from Labour’s list on the ninth district.

Sigmund Mifsud, Martin Ellul and Anthony Mifsud Bonnici are also eligible to submit their nomination.

Candidates must achieve 50% of the quota established in the election. The quota was 3,834.
