The Pitkalija farmers’ market in Ta’ Qali is set for a major infrastructural upgrade, with investment works estimated at around €1.5 million announced.

Parliamentary secretary for agriculture Roderick Galdes said that the upgrade will include major roadworks, including repaving the roads with asphalt and fixing the underground water distribution system.

The farmers’ tents will also be revamped and repainted, with roofs of light material to counter adverse weather conditions, a restored outside platform, and a new water and electricity system.

“The government is committed as ever to improving farmers’ work conditions and to improving the state of the Pitkalija, where they gather to reap the fruit of their labour,” Galdes said.

He added that the Labour administration had last year purchased 95,000 Pitkali crates and implemented a new electronic identification system to trace the crates.
