The Democrats are projected to win control of the two legislative chambers of the US Congress in what has been described by pundits as a “blue tsunami”.

Dominance over both houses of Congress will put severe limits on President Donald Trump’s power for the rest of his presidential term, especially on the domestic front.

It was a devastating night for the Republicans and Donald Trump, who told voters during the campaign it was his name that was on the ballot.

But everywhere, Americans rejected Trump’s politics as Democrats flipped key states in the Senate race with shock results in states that had voted Republican for years, including Texas, Ohio, South Carolina and North Carolina. The Democrats also won control of the 435-seat House, which gives them the ability to impeach Trump.

In comments to the media, Trump said he would respect the results and acknowledged the war on Iran was to blame. In an interview on Fox News, he admitted the gasoline prices driven by the Iran war likely affected voters’ decisions at the polls.

He said they “probably weren’t willing to do the short-term consequence of paying more for gasoline, and I understand that”.
