The United Kingdom has appointed a new envoy to Libya, replacing Michael Aron who is currently working from Tunisia since relocating from war-torn Libya.

Peter Millett CMG was appointed ambassador to Libya in succession to Aron, who will be transferring to another Diplomatic Service appointment. Millett will take up his appointment during July 2015.

Millett has served in Doha, UKRep Brussels, Athens, Nicosia and Amman.

"The current crisis in Libya is of enormous importance to the United Kingdom and to Europe. I am honoured to have an opportunity to contribute to international efforts to bring stability, security and renewed prosperity for the Libyan people," Millett said.

"The presence of extremists and terrorists in Libya and the ongoing fighting means that an early political solution and a Government of National Unity is essential to mobilise all Libyans behind a common agenda. I hope that, during my tenure, the British Embassy can return to Tripoli and help to tackle the future rebuilding of the country."
