Ronaldo secures Real Madrid’s last-16 spot

Real Madrid joined domestic rivals Barcelona in guaranteeing their qualification for the Champions League knockout stages as two Cristiano Ronaldo goals gave Jose Mourinho's men a 2-0 victory at Lyon on Wednesday night.

Ronaldo scored a goal in each half - including his 100th for the club in just 105 games - to secure the points at Stade Gerland.

And that, coupled with Group F rivals Ajax's 4-0 hammering of Dinamo Zagreb, maintains Real's five-point lead in the group and ensures their progression.

Ajax still have work to do to join them but they did their hopes no harm with their crushing victory over the Croatians, with goals from Gregory van der Wiel, Miralem Sulejmani, Siem de Jong and Nicolas Lodeiro.

Mario Gomez fired a first-half hat-trick as Bayern Munich strengthened their grip on Group A, but only after withstanding a brave late fightback by Napoli in a match which finished 10-a-side.

Gomez built on the brace he scored in the Bundesliga demolition of Nurnberg on Saturday with strikes in the 17th, 23rd and 42nd minutes to put the group leaders well in command in Germany.

But Federico Fernandez pulled one back before the break and, after Napoli's Camilo Zuniga and Bayern's Holger Badstuber were both harshly sent off for two bookable offences, Fernandez hit his second to make the final score 3-2.

Yaya Toure struck twice as Manchester City enhanced their hopes of Champions League progress with a convincing 3-0 win at Villarreal on Wednesday night.

Mario Balotelli, making his first appearance in the competition this season, was also on target from the penalty spot as City recorded back-to-back wins over the Spaniards to move second in Group A.

Inter Milan made light of their continued travails in Serie A with a 2-1 win over Lille which helped move Claudio Ranieri's men five points clear of their nearest rivals in Group B.

Walter Samuel opened the scoring in the 18th minute and Diego Milito added a second in the 65th, before an 83rd-minute strike from Tulio de Melo gave Lille a glimmer of hope.

The night got better for Inter as Trabzonspor and CSKA Moscow were forced to settle for a goalless draw in Turkey. The visitors' challenge got harder when Seydou Doumbia was sent off for two yellow cards in the 74th minute.

Benfica lost top spot in Group C to Manchester United on goal difference after being held to a 1-1 draw by Basle in Portugal.

Wayne Rooney turned into a midfield star as Manchester United's slow rehabilitation from that derby disaster continued with a 2-0 Champions League victory over Otelul Galati at Old Trafford.

On their first appearance at home since being thrashed 6-1 by local rivals City, Antonio Valencia's eighth-minute tap-in and a late deflected effort from Rooney ensured United grabbed maximum points.

The Portuguese side started the night two points clear and knowing a win would almost certainly be enough. But despite Rodrigo's fourth-minute opener, Basle grabbed a point when Benjamin Huggel equalised on 64.
