Brazilian media had nothing but harsh words for the national football team on Wednesday, one day after Germany beat the hosts 7-1 in the World Cup semi-final and ended their hopes of a sixth title.

The sports daily Lance left its front page blank with only a list of hand-written words appearing at the bottom: "Outrage, revolt, pain, frustration, irritation, shame, pity, disappointment...

"Say what you are feeling and fill the Lance front page yourself," it told readers.

The daily O Globo features a picture of defender David Luiz, who captained the team in the absence of suspended Thiago Silva, with his face buried in the grass.

"Shame, vexation, humiliation," O Globo wrote in capital letters.

Folha de Sao Paulo had a large black photo with a small green screen and the 7-1 score: "The national team suffers its worst defeat in history."

The front-page headline in the Extra newspaper read, "Congratulations to the runners-up of 1950, who were always accused of dealing Brazilian football its worst vexation.

"Yesterday we learned what real vexation is," Extra wrote, referring to the 1950 World Cup final defeat to Uruguay at the Maracana stadium in Sao Paulo.

The satirical newspaper Meia Hora wrote: "There will be no front page. Today we are in no mood to be funny, we were left ashamed. We'll be back tomorrow.

"By the time you have read this... it's another goal for Germany."
