Trees near Triton fountain to be moved to Lascaris ditch

The new design for the Triton fountain includes the removal of a number of tress which will be replanted in the Lascaris ditch.

As government plans to develop a square around the Triton Fountain in Valletta, a number of trees will be uprooted and replanted at the Lascaris ditch.

The trees are ficus nitida.

In a reply to a question raised by MP Mario de Marco, Infrastructure Minister Joe Mizzi confirmed that a number of trees will be removed, based on discussions which took place in January 2013.

"Discussions with the Environment Directorate established that a number of trees are too close to the edge of the ditch and it would be better if these are moved to the ditch," Mizzi told the MP.

Why do we need to continue doing this? The trees can be easily incorporated in the design of the new square. And what is wrong with ficus nitida...? And it is heartening to witness Mario de Marco taking an interest in trees when he moved to the opposition, he could have saved several hundreds of trees when minister!

Are they destined to the same sad fate, the Mdina trees went through after embellishment project, particularly those near Greeks gate.
