Prosecution closes evidence in 2012 stabbing incident

Court hears final witness in the case of Kevin Micallef, who stands accused of attempting to murder his estranged wife after stabbing her in Birkirkara, in May last year.

Police inspector Elton Taliana was the last witness to take the stand in the case seeing Kevin Micallef, 36 of Zurrieq being accused of attempting to murder his estranged wife Evelyn Micallef.

On 4 May 2012, Inspector Taliana was informed that a stabbing had occurred in Triq il-Kbira tas-Salib, Birkirkara. Arriving on the scene the inspector found the accused being rushed to hospital in an ambulance after he turned the knife on himself. 31-year-old Evelyn Micallef had already been admitted to hospital and her condition was critical.

"There were pools of blood everywhere and a penknife was stuck in a pot", the inspector said.

Investigations revealed how the couple had been undergoing separation proceedings. The estranged wife had already filed police reports against her former husband who had taken it upon himself to follow her around.

The woman was living with her new partner in Birkirkara. On the day of the incident, she had been at her partner's shop and was on her way home accompanied by her partner's brother. At the same time the accused had again followed her. On seeing his former wife in company, Micallef repeatedly sounded the horn. He kept doing this until the vehicle stopped and the wife got out of the car. At that moment, the accused approached her and stabbed her in her stomach, then turned the knife on himself.

The inspector continued that the police spoke to various witnesses at the Police headquarters. One of the people inside the car had suffered injuries to his hand when he tried to disarm the accused. Another witness was the person who had called the police when the incident kicked off outside his residence.

The case continues on 13 January.
