Man defrauds King’s Own Band Club

Treasurer of band club admits to misappropriating over €15,000 from King’s Own Band Club funds to finance his personal needs.

34-year-old Marvic Borg was today handed a three-year suspended jail term after pleading guilty to misappropriating over 15,000 from the King’s Own Band Club.

Back in March last year, committee members at the King’s Own Band Club noticed that a number of cheques belonging to the club were being  used for purchases unrelated to the band club. The members demanded an explanation from the accused, who at the time was the club’s treasurer. However, while admitting to using the club’s cheques for his personal shopping, Borg did not agree with repaying the misappropriated funds, leaving the club committee no other choice but to file a complaint with the police.

Prosecuting officer Godwin Scerri told the court that Borg cooperated with the police and had now pledged to pay back the money. “Until now the amount stands at 15,000, however investigations are still ongoing and there is a high probability that the final amount will be higher”, the inspector said.

Magistrate Doreen Clarke, confirmed Borg’s guilty plea and handed him a 13-month jail term suspended for three years. Borg was ordered to repay the  15,000 within the next six months.

Lawyer Paul Borg Olivier appeared for the accused.
