Salesgirl admits to jewellery thefts

The police had been called in after the owners and managers of Sterling Jewellers began to notice that stock was going missing

A woman who worked as a salesgirl at a jewellery shop has received a suspended sentence after she admitted to having stolen thousands of euro worth of jewellery from her workplace.

Police Inspectors Carlos Cordina and Trevor Micallef charged 40-year-old Jo Anne Camilleri, from San Gwann, with responsibility for a string of thefts which had occurred between January and March this year.

The police had been called in after the owners and managers of Sterling Jewellers began to notice that stock was going missing and suspicion had fallen on the salesgirl.

Magistrate Natasha Galea Sciberras was told how the police had recovered items of jewellery, worth around €3,500, from her residence. Her haul had included rings, earrings, bangles and necklaces.

Camilleri pleaded guilty to the charges.

In punishing the accused, the magistrate took into consideration her early guilty plea, the fact that she had returned all the items stolen, as well as the fact that this was her first conviction. Camillleri was handed a prison sentence of two years suspended for four years.

Lawyer Victor Bugeja defended Camilleri.
