Traffic policeman attacked in Floriana

The policeman sustained minor injuries after being punched by a man attempting to vandalize a van

A traffic policeman was injured yesterday after trying to stop a ma from damaging a vehicle.

The officer was in Triq il-Miratur in Floriana when he observed a man on the hood of a Peugeut van, attempting to rip off its wipers, while the driver was in the car.

The aggressor, a 36-year-old Egyptian man, punched the officer when he was ordered to stop. Onlookers tried to restrain the man but he continued assaulting the officer.

Members of the Rapid Intervention Unit arrived and arrested the man, taking him to the Valletta police station, where he again attempted to assault officers. En route to the health centre, he also tried to attack the driver of the vehicle he was in. Police then had to use force to subdue the man. He refused to cooperate with health centre staff and caused damage in the centre. He was taken to hospital for treatment for minor injuries and later released.

The traffic policeman sustained minor injuries in the incident.
