Man arrested after car chase allegedly beaten by police

A magisterial inquiry is underway after man claimed police had beaten him up when they apprehended him after a car chase

A man from Mtarfa has been remanded in custody on drugs charges after leading the police on a car chase in Bahar ic-Caghaq.

Darren Mizzi, 26, was arrested on 31 January after a car chase in which two other cars were damaged. He was found in possession of cannabis in circumstances which denoted that it was not intended solely for his personal use.

Mizzi was also charged with disobeying legitimate police orders and violently resisting the police.

Magistrate Simone Grech is understood to be holding a magisterial inquiry after the allegation was made that the man had been beaten up by police officers.

Defence lawyer Mario Mifsud entered a not guilty plea but did not request bail. Magistrate Audrey  Demicoli ordered the man be remanded in custody.

Inspector Justine Grech prosecuted.
