Labour Party congratulates Tunisians' democratic future

Labour Party expresses satisfaction with manner elections in Tunisia played out and believes that the Tunisian people’s free choice should be respected.

Opposition spokesperson for foreign affairs, George Vella said that the Labour Party was satisfied with the correct and orderly manner in which the Tunisian elections were conducted.

Vella congratulated the authorities responsible for the way the elections were organized and how the entire process was monitored to result in a positive outcome.

”The Tunisian people’s choice was a free one and therefore this choice must be respected,” Vella said.

Particular praise went to the Tunisian people, who during the first trial of democratic operation, according to Vella, showed in their actions and with their massive participation, the establishment of readiness and will to “deliver a democratic path to peace, social and economic development, the acquisition of fundamental freedoms and social justice”.

“The PL hopes that other Arab populations were inspired by the peaceful resolution carried out by the Tunisian population, so that they too share the imitate them, when they also come to democratically choose who will be assigned as their leader in coming years," Vella said.

While respecting the choice of the Tunisian people made during elections held, the PL said that it hopes all those elected will keep their electoral promises, and distance themselves from any political or religious divisions.

“We hope they will work together to give the Tunisian population a new constitution, upon which future elections can be based. They will then choose a President, Prime Minister and government who will offer the beginning of democratic dream which the Tunisian population fought for in the streets of their country," Vella said.

The PL also urged EU Countries to offer any assistance required in Tunisia at “this delicate time”, so the “plan for democracy which has emerged in Tunisia will grow, strengthen and build fundamental roots for peace in North Africa, further development, cooperation and security in the Mediterranean region”.
